Buy Nothing Day

Well, it is upon us. We’ve just survived the most contentious election in recent memory and now we have to contend with more than a month of advertisements, sales, emails, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Buy Local blah blah day. To get ready for the biggest consumer day of the year, Christmas. Now I’m not a religious person, but even I understand that the point of Christmas has been seriously perverted in our consumerism society.

I have never been a Black Friday shopper and this year my family and I has decided to buy each other experiences rather than objects. We don’t need any more stuff. So instead we are buying each other tickets to plays, movies, experiences like Zip-lining, paint balling, Paint Nite, Mystery Theater, escape rooms etc. the point is to buy things we can do together and remember forever, not buy something we’ll use for a while grow disappointed in and discard. I don’t know that a buy nothing day would ever really work as Americans love their things but it’s a good place to start.
